cost benefit

Spotify Premium! Should I, or shouldn’t I? That is the question.

Spotify has been my ‘go to’ music streaming app for the past year or two. It’s fine, except for all those annoying ads, with the volume twice the normal level, that keep interrupting my listening pleasure.  Of course, it doesn’t have to be this way. If I upgrade to Spotify Premium, then, for the low price of $12/month, I can listen without interruption to any music I want.

You see my dilemma. It’s a simple cost/benefit analysis. Cost: $12/month. Benefit: no ads. But, is it worth it? What should I do?

Much of life involves us in cost/benefit analysis. This is certainly true of the decision to become a follower of Jesus or not.

Here’s how it stacks up. Cost: Everything. Your entire life. Every moment. Every dollar. Every choice. Benefit: Everything. You get unconditional forgiveness, friendship with God, life eternal, an abundance of all that is good and pure and holy, and much more. It’s a great package, but for many the price is just too high.

Now consider the alternative. How about living for yourself and serving false gods that can never offer life? Cost: Everything. Your whole life. Every moment. Every dollar. Every choice. Benefit: False hope that quickly fades, followed by the certain death, judgement, and eternal separation from the true and living God.

Martyred missionary Jim Elliot famously said, ‘He is no fool who gives what he cannot keep to gain that which he cannot lose’. Jesus is worth everything. He handsomely rewards those who come to him. Give him your everything today.
