Those of you who’ve been around our church for a while know that we perpetuate a particular kind of reputation. We do food remarkably well here. No packet of Arnotts Assorted and some weak tea here for morning tea or supper; not in a million years. And if you’ve been around for a lunch or dinner, your palate and waistline bear witness.

But our God is not our stomach, and the wonderful people behind all the food here aren’t exercising their skills for the empty praise of hungry folk like you and me. I believe our top notch food is a genuine outflow of the heart of generosity and hospitality that is entirely fitting for a community centred on Jesus.

So I wonder whether this week, you would be up for the challenge of taking some of that Penno hospitality, and extending it to places where it might be a blessing to those around. You might very well be on the roster for a morning tea or a supper in the coming week, and if so, let me thank you in advance for your service. The rest of us might look to cook a meal or invite someone over to share a table with. And even those of us who are lousy cooks, we might be in the position to invite a friend out or order in, or even to just shout a coffee because the food is really secondary to the main thing; extending love and care and relationship in a way that is easy for people to swallow.
